BLAQ CARRIE

How does it feel to have such positive reviews about your music online (triple J, soundcloud) ? Were all the comments about your music positive back when you first started at the age of 15? Why did you choose to be an artist within the Hip-Hop genre?
A: AWESOME. Oh.....when i first started they were not that positive ( i guess back then i wasn’t that nice haha) with the exception of loved ones of course. With all honest reason i choose Hip Hop was because i just love the whole Hip Hop culture as a whole.
Hailing from Harare, Zimbabwe, when and why did you decide to base your music career in Brisbane? Do you think other states or even countries would have been better platforms to start your career?
A: Well i knida didn’t decide....what happend was i got accepted into university here in Brisbane then reconnected with my passion for music.
With all honest i really don’t know.......that’s really a hard one.
You say that you "want people to know you're different from the ordinary wannabe performers in the music game" and that "rather than superficial champagne music, your work aims to reflect on big issues and the important things in life".
Do you think that the rapping scene in Brisbane is lacking this sort of authentic and genuine music? Do Brisbane audiences just want to listen to superficial meaningless rap? If so does this make it harder for your music to be heard and recognised? Or have you found that Brisbane is embracing and appreciating this change of tone in the hip-hop scene?
A: Not at all. With that statement I was referring to when artist release a full body of work. It has to be something with some form of substance rather than make music for a quick fix. Am not trying to knock artist who do that type of music. No pun intended. I personally feel that the Brisbane is slowly gravitating towards it and starting to appreciate local artist.
Your music influences include Kanye West and Jay-Z, are you more influenced by their old music, as their styles have definitely changed as they rose in the music industry? Is it upsetting to see artists you are inspired by become superficial to a point? Are you worried that there might come a point in your career where you will have to create superficial music in order to progress in the industry?
A: I Am definitely influenced by their old material one of the main reason being it came from a very sincere place not saying there current material is not coming from a sincere place right now. Reason maybe their styles have changed now id due to the fact of them trying to stay relevant by feeding off the current style or wave the pop culture is moving to. At this particular moment its hard to say, i guess it will all depend on where i’ll be mentally.
Do you draw from your own personal experiences? What are your favourite songs from the EP? As your music is quite personal and highlights the "important things in life", is it hard to collaborate with other writers and let them in? Is it scary to put all your big ideas out there to a large audience who might disagree with them or not understand the metaphors?
A: Yes. Now that is not a fair question haha, they are all dear to me......very sentimental.
Is performing the only career option for of you?
A: Right now yes. maybe later on i’ll will definitely want to get into more song writing and vocal production leaning towards the Rhythm and Blues.
Winning a Grammy is an evident future goal for you, do you personally think you will get there? I sure do!!
A: With God’s graceful confidence and if i surround my self with the right team to help me get my music to a much bigger audience anything is possible.
Your music videos are of a very high standard. Are your music videos an important element of getting your music heard, or are you more focused on the live performance area? Are the stories featured in the video's your own or do you focus it on a story that the audience will better understand and relate to?
A: It's because the songs cannot rely on their own merits to become popular. The songs need that video added to them in order to gain some form of recognition. At the moment all stories in the videos are from my personal experiences.
Your song "Reality" really portrays your feelings towards the music industry. Do you think your feelings will ever change as time goes on? Will going on a talent show ever actually be an option? In 5-10 years time where do you hope to be in your career? Would America be an option?
A: With all honesty, I don’t think so. Me going to a talent show......not happening, unless I am a judge or host haha. In 5 years i hope to be performing and sharing a stage with one of my musical idols. America YES.
