THE 1975

Love Me

SINGLE REVIEW

Me when I first heard it:

When The 1975 gained a large following in 2013/2014, I was a fan...but not a huge fan. Their selftitled album was fantastic music and as a band their brand was clever and unshakeable. It was a well played introduction to The 1975. But for me it was missing something.

After several months hiatus and rumours of a disbanding, The 1975 returned onto the scene with a new "look." If someone ever said The 1975, the first thing that would come to my mind was black, moody and sullen. But with this new branding image of neon pink and white, I knew this moment for them was going to be a game changer.

With much anticipation "Love Me" was the first single released off their new album "I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It." Did it change my mind? YES IT DID!

This song explains everything that I thought was missing in the first album. It maintains The 1975 sound, but introduces new elements of 80's, funk and pop. On its release Matty tweeted:

And I could not agree more. "Love Me" has these "lets get freaky" type guitar riffs that resonate with you throughout the song. 80's music in the pop world is making a come back and I cannot think of anyone better than The 1975 to take a crack at it. Their new "look" is also evident in the music video, but along with the lyrics, the song doesn't avoid delivering an underlying message to its audience - a usual undertone to many of their songs. In this case its exploring the narcissism surrounding the band’s rise to fame.

Overall, if this is any indication of their new identity and sound exploration, I am a big fan and cannot wait for the rest!
